My Goal Progress – February 2017

It’s been a busy few weeks! I’ve been traveling for work and am now officially behind on everything: blog, goal progress and taxes. With any luck, I’ll get back into the swing of things and catch up in the next few weeks.

Here is my goal progress as of Feb. 2017:

Short Term Goals (over the next year)

  1. Start a family (have a baby and/or adopt).
  • Make a fertility appointment (Complete)
  • Find out what insurance will cover (Complete) – My insurance will only cover some medications, but no treatments. More to follow in the coming months.
  • Allocate money and start saving toward fertility and adoption (I expect this will cost $25-50K, at a minimum, over the next couple of year; we shouldn’t need too large a lump sum early on so we should be able to save incrementally over the next 1-2 years) (Complete)
  • Make a decision as to what fertility treatments to pursue (if any) following results from fertility appointment & test (Apr)
  • Research adoption; connect with someone who has adopted (Apr)
  1. Travel within the US several times per year and once internationally using points (utilizing basic travel hacking via credit cards).
  1. Improve my fitness level  and nutrition (work out 3-5 times/ week; prepare well-balanced meals at home and increase our vegetable consumption).
  • Plan my meals weekly and carve out time to prep as much as I can on the weekend and allocate time in the evenings to cook (usually, figuring out what I should make and what we have take the longest) (Ongoing)
  • Figure out what physical activity I want to incorporate and create (and stick to!!) a schedule. (pushing to Mar)
  1. Start one or more side hustles to eventually match my earned income.
  • Start a blog (complete)
  • Identify one other side hustle to start this year (July)
  1. Run and manage a successful blog.
  • Publish my blog (completed!)
  • Start an email list (Complete – now need to grow my list)
  • Create an editorial calendar to ensure a regular posting schedule (pushed to April)
  • Create goals and a marketing plan around my blog (pushing to April)
  • Grow my blog email list (new – will need to set some targets)
  1. Get a new job and increase my pay by $10-15K/year.
  • Update resume (May)
  • Look and apply for positions (we expect to move this summer so I’ll pick this up late in the year) (Sep)
  1. Attend FinCon 2017.
  • FinCon 2017 is Oct. 25-28 in Dallas; need to register (and determine what days to attend). (April)
  • Make airline and hotel reservations (maybe attend with my husband or friend). (July)
  1. Increase our net worth by $100K.
  • Breakdown the monthly network increase needed to achieve this (see my plan to increase our net worth by $100k here) (Complete)
  • Identify shortfall and try and close the gap (Completed: $864.34/month)
  • Continue monthly saving and investing to achieve goal (on-going)

To help me stay on track, I took the above objectives/tasks and assigned them to a specific month. I’ve already pushed back several of my tasks. I expect my summer and fall months will start filling up with new tasks or tasks that I don’t manage to complete on time. Nonetheless, I’ll continue to make progress (just slower than I’d hoped).

My initial tasks to start achieving my goals outlined by month

Jan-Dec 2017 (Ongoing aka New Habit!)

  • Earmarked money for fertility and adoption and will continue to save monthly (we can dip into our Digit Savings and we currently put about $1000 per month into a regular savings account which we will continue. I also cashed out an old life insurance policy my parents purchased for me when I was young.
  • Start saving for costs that we can’t cover with travel rewards – currently using Digit to save toward this goal. That In January, we were able to save almost $900 with Digit. At this rate we’ll have more money saved than we’ll need for travel.
  • Plan my meals weekly and carve out time to prep as much as I can on the weekend and allocate time in the evenings to cook (usually, figuring out what I should make and what we have take the longest)
  • Continue monthly saving and investing to achieve goal
  • Start (and grow) an email list for my blog

Mar 2017

  • Figure out what physical activity I want to incorporate and create (and stick to!!) a schedule
  • Identify the trips we would like to cover with points
  • Identify how to grow the blog email list I started and start pushing out updates using the email list

Apr 2017

  • Make a decision as to what fertility treatments to pursue (if any) following results from fertility appointment
  • Research adoption (connect with someone who has adopted)
  • Create an editorial calendar to ensure a regular posting schedule (Well, I created one, but obviously haven’t stuck to my schedule since this is the first post this month. Will add this to my April list).
  • Create goals and a marketing plan around my blog
  • Create a credit card reward plan and start executing
  • FinCon 2017 is Oct. 25-28 in Dallas; need to register (and determine what days to attend)

May 2017

  • Update resume

June 2017 – TBD

July 2017

  • Identify one other side hustle to start this year
  • Make airline and hotel reservations (maybe attend with my husband or friend)

Aug 2017 – TBD

Sep 2017

  • Look and apply for positions (we expect to move this summer so I’ll pick this up late in the year)

Oct 2017 – TBD

Nov 2017 – TBD

Dec 2017 – TBD

Completed

  • Make a fertility appointment (awaiting test results and possible courses of action).
  • Find out what insurance will cover – My insurance will only cover some medications, but no treatments. More to follow in the coming months.
  • Allocate money and start saving toward fertility and adoption (I expect this will cost $25-50K, at a minimum, over the next couple of year; we shouldn’t need too large a lump sum early on so we should be able to save incrementally over the next 1-2 years)
  • Earned the Southwest Companion Pass and have continued to spend on our Chase Sapphire Preferred card (read my post on how I earned the SW Companion Pass)
  • Start a blog
  • Start an email list
  • Breakdown the monthly network increase needed to achieve this (see my plan to increase our net worth by $100k here)
  • Identify shortfall and try and close the gap ($864.34/month)

Whew – not as much progress as I had hoped, but still moving forward. I had plans to address my medium term goals, as well, but haven’t had a chance (hope to cover those in April). I’m also hoping to  cover creating SMART goals and provide some actions and tips for you to develop and achieve your own financial goals.

Is it me, or is this year flying by? How are you doing on your goals? If you stop by, I’d love for you to leave a comment below!

    1. Thank you, SIL! It’s been painfully slow progress this month (as you can see with my lack of blog posts), but I’m hopeful I’ll pick up my pace next month. I suppose as long as we keep moving forward we’ll eventually get there. 🙂
