My Goal Progress – January 2017

I’ve made progress on some goals and none on the others. As I work through these goals, I’m adding objectives or tasks to complete and assigning a month to help me stay on track. For today, here are my original goals, re-ordered with tasks.

Short Term Goals (over the next year)

Start a family (have a baby and/or adopt).

  • Make a fertility appointment (Complete)
  • Find out what insurance will cover (Feb)
  • Allocate money and start saving toward this (I expect this will cost $25-50K, at a minimum, over the next couple of year; we shouldn’t need too large a lump sum early on so we should be able to save incrementally over the next 1-2 years) (Feb)
  • Research adoption (connect with someone who has adopted) (Apr)

Travel within the US several times per year and once internationally using points (utilizing basic travel hacking via credit cards).

Improve my fitness level (work out 3-5 times/ week) and nutrition (prepare well-balanced meals at home and increase our vegetable consumption).

  • Plan my meals weekly and carve out time to prep as much as I can on the weekend and allocate time in the evenings to cook (usually, figuring out what I should make and what we have take the longest) (Ongoing)
  • Figure out what physical activity I want to incorporate and create (and stick to!!) a schedule. (Feb)

Start one or more side hustles to eventually match my earned income.

  • Start a blog (complete)
  • Identify one other side hustle to start this year (July)

Run and manage a successful blog.

  • Publish my blog (completed!)
  • Create an editorial calendar to ensure a regular posting schedule (Feb)
  • Start an email list (Feb)
  • Create goals and a marketing plan around my blog (Mar)

Get a new job and increase my pay by $10-15K/year.

  • Update resume (May)
  • Look and apply for positions (we expect to move this summer so I’ll pick this up late in the year) (Sep)

Attend FinCon 2017.

  • FinCon 2017 is Oct. 25-28 in Dallas; need to register (and determine what days to attend). (April)
  • Make airline and hotel reservations (maybe attend with my husband or friend). (July)

Increase our net worth by $100K.

  • Breakdown the monthly network increase needed to achieve this (see my plan to increase our net worth by $100k here) (Complete)
  • Identify shortfall and try and close the gap (Completed: $864.34/month)
  • Continue monthly saving and investing to achieve goal (on-going)

I have a tendency to want to start all of my goals right away (I’m usually filled with enthusiasm when I’m first organizing and getting started). Inevitably, I cram too much in a short amount of time and my tasks/objectives end up sliding. To help me balance my tasks throughout the year and ensure I’m not overlooking anything, I list all of my tasks/objectives under a month header (you could change this to quarterly or even weekly, depending on how you work best). I still front load my tasks: Jan-Apr will have the most tasks, whereas the subsequent months will seem empty. This is intentional since I know that achieving most of these financial goals will require more actions than I’ve initially identified.

After I assign my tasks to a specific month, I’ll save this list and review weekly to ensure I’m completing tasks and create more tasks, as needed.

Tasks to start achieving my goals outlined by month

Jan-Dec 2017 (On-going aka New Habit!)

  • Start saving for costs that we can’t cover with travel rewards – currently using Digit to save toward this goal
  • Plan my meals weekly and carve out time to prep as much as I can on the weekend and allocate time in the evenings to cook (usually, figuring out what I should make and what we have take the longest
  • Continue monthly saving and investing to achieve goal

  • Identify the trips we would like to cover with points
  • Figure out what physical activity I want to incorporate and create (and stick to!!) a schedule
  • Create an editorial calendar to ensure a regular posting schedule

Additionally, I’ll cover creating SMART goals and provide some actions and tips for you to develop and achieve your own financial goals.

Overall I’m happy to be making progress, but realize I have a long way to go. How are you doing with your 2017 financial goals? How do you track your progress?
